QR code generator

Make a QR code for a link, text, Wi-Fi network, email, phone number or text message.

The code is generated on your device. Nothing you type is sent or stored.

The generator needs JavaScript, which is off or blocked in this browser. Turn it on for this page to make a code. The rest of this site works without it.

A QR code can hide a link. Before you open one, scan it with SafeScan QR to see where it leads.

How to make a QR code that scans

  1. Choose what the code holds and fill in the details. The code updates as you type.
  2. Keep the code dark on a light background. Black on white scans best, and many phones cannot read a light code on a dark background.
  3. For print, download the SVG, or the PNG at the Print size. An SVG stays sharp at any size.
  4. Print the code at least 2 cm (about 0.8 inches) wide, and larger when people scan it from further away. A common rule is one tenth of the scanning distance: 30 cm across for a poster read from 3 meters.
  5. Keep the blank margin around the code, and do not let text or graphics touch it.
  6. Scan the code with your own phone, from the real distance, before you print many copies.

Static codes: why these codes never expire

Many QR code sites make dynamic codes. The code holds a short link to their server, which forwards each scan to your address. If the subscription ends or the service closes, every printed code stops working, and the service sees every scan along the way.

This generator makes static codes: your link, text or network details are written into the code itself. The code works for as long as its content does, and no one sits in between. The trade-off is that a printed code cannot be changed. To send people somewhere else, make a new code.

Questions and answers

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is free, with no account, no limit on the number of codes and no watermark.

Is anything I type sent anywhere?

No. The code is made in your browser, and the page's security policy blocks every network connection, so what you type, including a Wi-Fi password, cannot leave your device. Nothing is kept after you close the page.

Can I use the codes commercially?

Yes. The codes are yours to use on products, packaging, menus, signs and anything else, with no attribution.

Can I add a logo?

Not on this website. A logo inside the code is available with SafeScan QR Pro on Android, which also makes the code on your device.

How do I share my Wi-Fi with a QR code?

Choose Wi-Fi network, enter the network name and password, and choose the security type shown in your router settings. Most home networks use WPA2 or WPA3. The camera on most Android phones and iPhones offers to join the network when it scans the code. Anyone who scans the code can read the password, so put the code only where you would share the password itself.

Which error correction level should I choose?

Medium suits most uses. Choose a higher level for codes that may get dirty or scratched, such as stickers outdoors. A higher level makes the code denser, so print it larger.

Why does my code not scan?

The usual causes are colors that are too close, a light code on a dark background, a missing margin, a code printed too small, or too much content. The generator warns you about colors and density as you go.
